On Saturday, October 24th over 20 neighborhood volunteers gathered to help clean up Nelson Park. Activity centered on the playground area where men, women and children attacked the weeds and spread yards and yards of bark dust provided by the City of Salem. In just three hours it looked like a totally different place. Weeds and tall grass were also removed from the base of trees and along the edge of the street and piles of leaves were left for city crews to pick up on Monday.
“This is just the first of many work parties. We wanted to spruce the place up a bit before the winter weather set in. Come spring, we’re going to expand our efforts to other areas of the park,” said one of members of the Friends of Nelson Park Steering Committee. “We want to thank everybody who came out to help, it was truly a community effort. We also want to thank Roth’s for the coffee and donuts they donated and the City of Salem for the bark dust and letting us borrow their wheel barrows, weed whackers and other equipment.”
Thanks again to everyone who came out to help on Saturday. Special thanks to John Kleeman with the Public Works Department with the City of Salem who gave up part of his Saturday to drop-off an pick up the city tools and equipment – and to Roth’s for the coffee and donuts.
